Submission and Formatting Guidelines

The following page contains the guidelines for submissions to IMPULSE. Please note that failure to follow any of these qualifications is cause for immediate rejection of any article regardless of quality or content.

  • First authors must be undergraduate students (United States) or must be in a program that incorporates the undergraduate training period (International) or must have completed research pertaining to the submitted manuscript when the author was an undergraduate. There are no restrictions on additional authors.
  • All authors MUST have a mentoring professor who has reviewed and commented on the paper (and research, where applicable). IMPULSE will not accept a submission until it has been reviewed by a mentoring professor.
  • There are no specific length limitations, but those articles that would be published as "brief communications" or "short essays" in other journals may receive less consideration than full articles.
  • Manuscripts should be written in English and checked thoroughly for spelling and grammar errors. IMPULSE will publish articles with either British spellings or American spellings, but reserves the right to change spelling within an article to assure consistency (e.g., colour would become color if behaviour is spelled behavior).
  • All authors must agree to the author agreement.
  • If a submission has been accepted and needs to be revised by the authors, re-submissions must include a cover letter stating specific revisions that have been made.
  • All images included in a submission must be converted to .JPG or .GIF files. Appropriate titles and captions must be included for figures and tables. It is the responsibility of the author to receive permission for the use of any objects, figures, tables, and pictures that have been previously published/copyrighted. Please contact the IMPULSE Editor-in-Chief (impulse@appstate.edu) for more information.
  • The article must be submitted in MSWord with all figures and pictures in the article where the author desires them. The following formatting guidelines are to be strictly followed (or simply use the model article template (DOC).)

Similarly, all research involving human subjects must include the appropriate institutional review board approval. This includes post hoc analysis from data collected for other studies; assurance that the IRB approval for the original study included later analysis must be supplied.
